Pipe Major: Martin Frewen

Martin Frewen

Grew up in Dunedin, and learned piping throught the John McGlashan College Pipe Band. His main tutors were Don Smith followed by Airdrie Stewart. Also influenced by Donald Bain, Richard Hawke and Brian Switalla.

Solo successes include the majority of NZ Solo open events, including a rare Gold Medal and Clasp win at Hastings in 2001. Also competed in Scotland briefly between 1999 and 2001, achieving good results including 2nd in the Silver Medal on the first attempt, as well as overall winner of the Young Piper of the Year in Uist. He competed once in the Gold medal at Inverness and Oban but was not in the prize list. He has represented Australasia several times in Lorient, and achieved a 3rd place on his last appearance.

Band experince included serving with the NZ Police pipe band in their heyday from 1995 to 1999. Also guested with the Queensland Highlanders Pipe Band winning Grade 2 at the 2001 world pipe band championships, as well as the Manawatu Scottish in 2003.

Martin has been involved with A&D since 2003, and has settled in Auckland with his wife Andrea, who plays the Tenor drum in the band.

"I started drumming at the age of 10 through Stirling McMurchy of the Strathclyde Police Pipe Band at my local pipe band Milngavie in Glasgow.

I then moved to the Knightswood Pipe Band where I joined the Grade 3 band. In 1988 the band won the European, World & Champion of Champions titles and were promoted to Grade 2 the following year. I was taught at Knightswood by Alastair Hepburn, who is one of my mentors.

In the winter of 1991 I moved to The Shotts & Dykehead PB under the leadership of Jim Kilpatrick, MBE. I had 3 wonderful seasons at Shotts winning every major drumming title there was to win. The experience of playing in the Worlds best drum corp was second to none and I met many new friends through my travels with Shotts.

In 1994 I moved to New Zealand to take up a corp position with the Wellington Police PB which was then re-named the New Zealand Police PB. I had 9 fun filled years at NZ Police competing at the Worlds, in America & Japan, and also winning several NZ Championships & Drumming titles along the way.

In 2003 I became leading drummer for the City of Wellington PB for 2 seasons before being approached to take over as Leading drummer of A&D in 2005.

Since joining A&D I have enjoyed a tremendous amount of success as a drum corps & band. This is due to the tremendous team work that the A&D band has and where playing good quality music is the top priority.

I live in Wellington with my wife Kylie, who is also a piper, champion highland dancer & is also a tenor drummer in the band!"
